This horse was enjoying a fine, sunny afternoon.  I was fascinated by the red highlights on the horse, and the way her face is lost in shadow, but still has so much expression.  What is she thinking about?  Getting a loose, grassy background that did not compete with the horse, but that supported her in space, proved to be the main challenge of this piece.  I painted the horse and then had to look at it and think about the background for an entire week.
